Description

Want to challenge your students and give them an engaging, real-life example of finding surface area of 3D figures? This math project allows students to apply what they know while learning about unique monuments from the ancient world.

In this project, students are museum curators who want to display scale models of some of the wonders of the ancient world.

In order to do that, they must use their math skills to find measurement conversions and the surface area of each figure in order to prepare for the museum display.

This is a great way to combine math with social studies, especially if your students are learning about ancient civilizations already!

Math Skills Needed for this Project:

  • Measurement conversions (using ratios)
  • Finding Total Surface Area of 3D Figures (pyramids & prisms)
  • Decimal Computation (optional-you can provide calculators if you don’t want students getting bogged down in computation)

Ways to Use the Project:

This project would work well as 5 math centers if you would like students to complete the project in class over the course of 3-5 days (depending on your students and how quickly they complete each station).

However you can also create individual packets for students to complete on their own if you prefer.

Wonders of the Ancient World Included in the Project:

  • Pyramid of Giza
  • Greek Parthenon
  • Roman Pantheon
  • Great Wall of China
  • Chichen Itza

Included in the Download:

  • Instructions for teachers
  • Overview of the project for students
  • 5 Color posters with info on each monument (include these at each station or hang around the room)
  • Measurement details pages with measurements for each monument (black and white for easy printing)
  • Answer sheets for students to show all work as they convert measurements and find total surface area (also black and white)
  • Answer key for all pages of the project
