Description

Want to challenge your students and give them an engaging, real-life example of using percentages? This math project allows students to apply what they know while making choices about what to buy.

In this differentiated project, students go on a shopping spree at the store of their choice. The catch is they must stick to their budget, while calculating discounts, sales tax and the final total.

This is a fun way for 7th or 8th grade students to put their knowledge to work in a way that gives them choice & real life practice.

(If you have interest, you could even use this with advanced 6th graders who want to learn how to calculate discounts & sales tax)

In order to be sure students have the prerequisite skills they need, a couple of review activities are included to make sure students are confident using these percent skills.

Plus, you can easily differentiate for students’ needs and level because there are 3 different versions of the project included.

Meet your students where they are by choosing a project level that’s right for them!

Math Skills Needed for this Project:

  • Calculating percent of a number to find discount
  • Finding the new price of each item after the discount
  • Calculating percent of a number to find sales tax
  • Decimal addition to find the total amount of money spent

(Optional: provide calculators to help students who may get bogged down in lots of computation. They will still need to demonstrate an understanding of percent, discount & tax, but won’t be slowed down by adding lots of prices together).

Ways to Use the Project:

If you would like to complete the project in class, students could work with partners to split up the work and discuss the choices.

However, you could also assign this as an individual project at the end of your percent chapter, to be completed at home.

This could also work as an extra credit project, early finisher challenge or end-of-year application project.

Included in the Download:

  • Instructions/Tips for teachers
  • What’s the Total Cost? Worksheet (to review operations with decimals)
  • Let’s Save Some Money! Worksheet (to review calculating discounts & total price in preparation for the project)
  • 3 Projects (low, medium, high challenge levels) with Student recording pages
  • Grading Rubric with assigned tasks/points values
