Description

Want to give your students an engaging, real-life application of when to use least common multiple (LCM) and greatest common factor (GCF)? This math project allows students to apply what they know to plan out a multi-day music festival.

In this differentiated project, students will use the given information about bands’ set times and merchandise options and costs to decide who will perform when at the music festival, and choose the items for the gift bags attendees receive.

Through their choices and planning, they will use least common multiple to ensure the sets on the different music stages end at the same time. They will then use greatest common factor to choose items for each gift bag, ensuring they maximize the bags, while staying within the given budget.

Plus, for you as the teacher, there are 3 different project options of varying difficulty levels, making it easy to differentiate and meet the needs of each student.

There is also a grading rubric included, which you can use to grade each student’s work. Also included is a blank rubric, allowing you to determine your own grading criteria and point values.

This is a fun way for 6th grade students to put their knowledge to work in a way that gives real life practice and a fun application.

Ways to Use the Project: 

If you would like to complete the project in class, students could work with small groups to discuss and compare their choices for the different music groups who will perform and discuss and compare their gift bag choices.

However, you could also assign this as an individual project after your unit on LCM & GCF, to be completed at home (or in class if time allows).

This could also work as an extra credit project, early finisher challenge or end-of-year application project for 6th grade.
