Dream City: Coordinate Plane Math Project for 5th Grade – Real Life Math – PRINT
$6.00
Description
Want to challenge your students and give them an engaging, real-life example of points and shapes on the coordinate plane? This math project allows 5th grade students to write coordinates, find area of shapes on the coordinate plane, and navigate their dream city by giving directions between points.
In this differentiated project, students map out their ‘dream city’ on the coordinate plane. There are 3 different levels to choose from, allowing you to pick the project that best meets the needs and abilities of your students (or best fits the amount of time you have).
For this project, students will do the following:
- Label a coordinate plane with units of 1
- Draw buildings with a specific area on the coordinate plane
- Design and draw several buildings of their own and determine the area
on the coordinate plane - Determine the entrance to each building and write it as a coordinate
point - Give directions on the coordinate plane between buildings using
coordinate points and directions - Design and draw parade routes through their city
This is a fun way for 5th grade students to put their knowledge to work in a way that gives them choice & real life practice.
You could even use this with 6th graders as a review of graphing, plotting & writing points, and finding area of shapes on the coordinate plane.
Plus, you can easily differentiate for students’ needs and level because there are 3 different versions of the project included.
Meet your students where they are by choosing a project level that’s right for them!
Ways to Use the Project:
If you would like to complete the project in class, students could work with partners or small groups to split up the work and discuss their choices.
However, you could also assign this as an individual project at the end of your expressions unit, to be completed at home (or in class if time allows).
This could also work as an extra credit project, early finisher challenge or end-of-year application project.
Included in the Download:
- Instructions/Tips for teachers
- 3 Leveled Projects (low, medium, & high challenge levels) with Student recording pages (including a coordinate plane page)
- Grading Rubric with assigned tasks/point values
- Blank Grading Rubric, allowing you to create your own criteria/point values
NOTE: An answer key is not included because students choose how to layout and organize their city, along with additional buildings and parade routes, so everyone’s answers will be different.
There is a detailed rubric included, however, to help students know expectations and to make the projects easier for you to grade.
