Description

Want to give your students an engaging, real-life application of writing expressions & inequalities and solving equations? This math project allows students to apply what they know to plan out their perfect days at the carnival.

In this differentiated project, students will use the given information and their budget constraints to choose how they will spend multiple days at the carnival.

Through their choices and planning, they will write expressions and inequalitiesto represent the different rides & height requirements, and write and solve linear equations for the ticket and food costs.

Plus, for you as the teacher, there are 3 different project options of varying difficulty levels, making it easy to differentiate and meet the needs of each student.

This is a fun way for 6th grade students to put their knowledge to work in a way that gives real life practice and a fun application. You could even use this with 7th graders as a review of expressions, equations, and inequalities before more complex equations and inequalities.

Math Skills Needed for this Project: 

• Write algebraic expressions from words
• Write inequalities to represent real life constraints
• Write one-step equations
• Solve one-step equations
• Addition with decimals to calculate total costs

Ways to Use the Project: 

If you would like to complete the project in class, students could work with small groups to discuss their expressions, inequalities, and equations before making their choices.

However, you could also assign this as an individual project after your unit on expressions, equations, and inequalities, to be completed at home (or in class if time allows).

This could also work as an extra credit project, early finisher challenge or end-of-year application project for 6th grade.
