Description

Do your students have a solid understanding of proportional relationships and how the constant of proportionality relates to the equation? This engaging partner challenge will help students compare and connect the pieces by analyzing tables to find the constant and write the equation.

Proportional Relationships: Partner Pair Up includes 10 different problems/relationships for students to consider together.

It is designed to help 7th and 8th grade students understand that we can talk about rates in two different ways. It

It’s also important for students to understand how the constant relates to the table and the equation (again, you can write two equations for each relationship) in order to prepare them for studying linear functions in algebra.

Another goal of this task is to help students make sense of & feel comfortable writing a generalized equation (typically known as y = kx, where k is the constant of proportionality).

By working with a partner to look at the same situation in two different ways, hopefully students will begin to see the proportional relationship between the two units as well as how that relates to the equation.

How to Use This Resource:

This is designed to be completed in pairs. This is important because they will be looking at the same proportional relationship from two different perspectives. They may discuss together during or after completing their own questions, and will probably find that one version is easier than the other (when the constant of proportionality is greater than one).

To prep, print a page for each pair and give one student ‘Version A’ and one student ‘Version B.’

Students begin by finding the missing values in the given table. There are then two questions: what is the constant of proportionality, and how could you write an equation to represent this relationship.

After they have each completed the table, identified the constant, and written an equation, they can discuss the situation together to compare.

To begin, you might give all pairs the same problem, which you can then discuss as a whole class when all groups are finished.

Once students are familiar, you can give each group a different relationship, and they can then share their findings with the class.

This can be used as a daily warm-up throughout your study of proportions and proportional relationships, as a review later in the year, or as an exit ticket assessment so you can see how students are thinking.

Included in the Download:

  • Teaching tips, instructions & discussion questions
  • 10 proportional relationships in tables for partners to discuss & compare (half page for partner A and a half page for partner B)
  • Answer key for all 10 problems
