Pattern Block Build-a-Bug Activity Mats – Compose Shapes – Grades K-1 – PRINT

Looking for a new way to explore shapes with your students? This fun set helps kids see & play with shapes while creating various bugs using pattern blocks. They then count how many blocks they used!

Make math hands on with these simple prompts and a tub of pattern blocks. Discuss the shapes & their properties with your students and then let them play with shapes as they learn different types of insects.

This would be a fun addition to your science unit!

Build-a-Bug Pattern Block Mats:

First, this download includes simple pattern block designs to allow your kids to build a variety of bugs out or pattern blocks.

They can build the bugs right on the mat, or on the table next to the mat. Then they count and write the total number of each block on their shape mat.

This download will help kids play with shapes to build each bug:

There is a color & black and white version of each “build a bug” mat for your convenience.

Spin & Build Game Mats:

In addition to the pages above, there are simple spin and build game mats, which students can use independently or along with a partner.

For these games, simply provide a paperclip and pencil for students to create the spinner.

They then spin the spinner to choose a shape, then add that shape to the mat as they build their bug.
