The first activity in this resource is a simple, hands-on lab that helps students see how slope changes as the rise/run change using a stack of books.

Guide students through the lab and a brief discussion to make sure they understand how it ties together before walking through the guided notes as a class.

Rate of Change Guided Notes:

Next you’ll find a simple set of guided notes to help students learn important vocabulary and look at additional examples.

Using a real world context, students will see negative & positive rate of change in a table and discuss what that means and what it would look like on a graph.

Rate of Change Task Cards:

Lastly, a set of task cards is included for additional practice, allowing students to find rate of change and initial value from descriptions, tables and graphs.

This will help them see how all 3 relate to each other and prepare them for further study of linear equations and slope.
