Description

Do your students struggle to make sense of functions? Do they understand how all the different representations relate to each other, such as an equation, table & graph? This introduction to functions set will help you explain & explore functions in a variety of ways, providing your students with a solid foundation as they move to analyzing linear functions.

Use this set of functions notes & function math center games with 8th grade students who are just learning about functions, or with 9th grade students who are still struggling and needing a review.

Functions Guided Notes:

First, this set of resources includes 2 sets of guided notes. These fill-in-the-blank student note pages provided structure so students can think about different examples as a group and on their own, and then have organized notes they can refer back to later.

The first set of guided notes covers a basic introduction to functions: what they are and what they are not using a vending machine analogy. The goal is for students to develop a conceptual understanding of what is a function v. what is not a function and WHY rather than trying to memorize.

The second set of guided notes focuses on representing functions with equations and a table of values. There are a variety of examples that you can work through together & some for students to try on their own.

Functions Math Center Resources:

Finally, this set includes a simple math center that you can use a couple of different ways to give students more practice & experience with creating tables of values, comparing functions and graphing functions on the coordinate plane.

Directions for setting up an independent activity (creating function tables) as well as a partner challenge are included.

The goal of all these resources is to provide a solid understanding of functions and to make connections between all the different representations.

This will also help students practice graphing functions in a variety of types.
