Math is my passion and I have taught in the classroom from 1986-2024. My key philosophy is to teach math in such a way that the student understands the foundational concepts so that they can apply them in the myriad of variations. In 2016 I started Mathlight and began producing math materials that include full curriculums for Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 & Algebra 2.

A solid understanding of place value is essential for all the computation students need to learn. In this session, explore ways to help students build a solid place value foundation, which tools and visuals to use, and how to set students up for long-term success.

We often teach computation as a series of memorized steps. But when students don’t understand the reasoning behind them, they mix up steps and end up with unreasonable answers. By scaffolding the teaching of multi-digit multiplication in a way that leads to the algorithm, we help students develop a deeper understanding of it. Bonus: it also strengthens their understanding of division!

Deep understanding is essential for filling in the number sense gaps that are so prevalent in our schools. Let’s look at ways to make multiplication and division visual, so your students truly understand the math rather than getting trapped in a memorized series of steps. This session will address multi-digit multiplication and division, with an emphasis on effective models that build understanding.

It’s no wonder so many students struggle with decimal operations. Most programs jump right into rules and algorithms without building number sense. Today’s students need deeper understanding but are coming to us with less confidence and less stamina than ever. Reach them where they are by introducing decimal numbers the same way we introduced whole numbers. Come learn hands-on and interactive lessons with games, tasks, and activities to engage your students and position them for success with decimal operations!

In this presentation, decimal multiplication will be explored with a focus on place value and number sense. Attendees will leave with 5 different number sense routines for teaching students to approach decimal multiplication with confidence, helping them build a solid mathematical foundation and a deeper understanding of the operation.

Learn how to help students conceptualize the meaning of multiplying fractions and whole numbers so that students’ answers actually make sense! Let’s connect their understanding of equal groups multiplication to real life fraction scenarios that you can replicate in your class.

If your students are quick to forget the algorithm or ‘tricks’ for dividing fractions, learn how to start by building a conceptual understanding! In this session, learn the different types of division and how to explore with real world contexts and visual models that show students why the algorithm works. Then what they learn will actually stick!

Let’s learn some alternative strategies for teaching computational skills such as subtraction with regrouping, multiplication, long division, and equivalent fractions. These strategies are simple to implement and easier for many students to master.

Is probability frustrating for your students? Like throwing a dart and trying to get a bullseye? Simple probability is probably simpler than you think and can be a really fun and engaging unit each school year. With hands-on manipulatives, numbers and terms kids can understand, and math that doesn’t get super hard, probability will be a heads over everything affair in your classroom.

Discover engaging and practical ways to bring statistics to life in your middle school math classroom! This session will explore fun and interactive strategies for teaching mean, median, mode, range, and other key statistical concepts. Learn how to connect statistics to real-world scenarios, incorporate data analysis into daily routines, and make math more meaningful for your students.

Welcome to a presentation on how to ditch the boring drill-style worksheets! Instead, replace them with some hands-on real world engaging options your students will love. Connect the needed standards for Area and Circumference of circles to a more hands-on approach that your students will enjoy and remember.

Join Shana as she discusses simple tips and tools for teaching integer operations. Learn about unique ideas and visuals for adding & subtracting integers, as well as ways to think logically about multiplying and dividing integers. She then shares ideas and encouragement for helping students who still struggle to work with integers when solving problems later.

This workshop will explore strategies to develop an understanding of foundational concepts for solving equations. I will give you key phrases and guide you in how to implement them so that your students will be able confidently solve equations.

Engage your students with engaging strategies to introduce and teach slope! In this session, you’ll explore creative hooks, real-world connections, and interactive activities that make this essential math concept accessible and fun. Walk away with practical ideas and ready-to-use resources to bring slope to life in your classroom.

Struggling to make slope stick? In Slope Without Tears: Songs, Strategies & Slope Solutions, you’ll discover engaging, low-prep strategies to help students master slope concepts with confidence. From catchy songs to visual tricks and problem-solving hacks, this session will equip you with tools to make slope lessons more interactive and memorable. Walk away with ready-to-use ideas that turn frustration into understanding—no tears required!

Unsure of how to introduce systems of equations & teach in a way that students understand and remember? In this session, learn how to ensure students understand the meaning of the solution, the best order for teaching the methods of solving systems and unpack elimination and substitution so you have a greater understanding of these methods.
