A solid understanding of place value is essential for all the computation students need to learn. In this session, explore ways to help students build a solid place value foundation, which tools and visuals to use, and how to set students up for long-term success.

We often teach computation as a series of memorized steps. But when students don’t understand the reasoning behind them, they mix up steps and end up with unreasonable answers. By scaffolding the teaching of multi-digit multiplication in a way that leads to the algorithm, we help students develop a deeper understanding of it. Deep understanding is essential for filling in the number sense gaps that are so prevalent in our schools. Let’s look at ways to make multiplication and division visual, so your students truly understand the math rather than getting trapped in a memorized series of steps. It’s no wonder so many students struggle with decimal operations. Most programs jump right into rules and algorithms without building number sense.
