Sports Statistics Data Analysis Project: Real Life Math – Grades 6-7 – PRINT
$8.00
Description
Want to challenge your students and give them an engaging, real-life example of analyzing data? This math project allows students to apply what they know while gathering & analyzing data about the sports team or individual of their choice.
In this differentiated project, students pick a data point to analyze for their favorite sports team or player (such as home runs hit, wins in a season, free throws made, etc.).
They then calculate measures of center and more in order to analyze the data & draw conclusions.
They also create graphs (such as dot plot, box plot, histogram) to display the data they collected.
This is a fun way for 6th grade students to put their knowledge to work in a way that gives them choice & real life practice. You could even use this with 7th graders as a review of key vocabulary & statistics measures.
In order to be sure students have what they need to complete the project, a list of vocabulary terms is included, which you can print for each individual student or small group.
Plus, you can easily differentiate for students’ needs and level because there are 3 different versions of the project included.
Meet your students where they are by choosing a project level that’s right for them!
Math Skills Needed for this Project:
- Collect and organize data about a sports team or individual.
- Calculate the mean, median, mode, range, mean absolute deviation,
minimum, maximum, first quartile, third quartile, and interquartile range. - Create dot plots, box plots, and histograms to display their data.
- Interpret measures of center and variability to determine the best
representations of their data set. - Justify their choices of statistics and graphs based on the data
collected.
Ways to Use the Project:
If you would like to complete the project in class, students could work with partners to split up the work and discuss the choices.
However, you could also assign this as an individual project at the end of your statistics chapter, to be completed at home (or in class if time allows).
This could also work as an extra credit project, early finisher challenge or end-of-year application project.
Included in the Download:
- Instructions/Tips for teachers
- Definitions page for student reference
- 3 Projects (low, medium, high challenge levels) with Student recording pages
- 3 Grading Rubrics with assigned tasks/point values (different rubric for each level of the project)
- Blank Grading Rubric, allowing you to create your own criteria/point values
