Math Writing Prompts to Encourage Deep Thinking | Grades 2-5

Looking for ways to get your kids thinking deeply about math concepts or common math tools and symbols? These simple writing prompts will get kids thinking and talking to spark creative math talk in your classroom.

Each writing prompt is a full page, with room to doodle, take notes come up with examples and non-examples or write complete sentences.

This download includes 26 different prompts, in two different sections.

In this download you will find:

• 12 How Do You Know? prompts
• 14 Tell Me About It… prompts

The How do you know? prompts encourage kids to think deeply about ideas or concepts they might otherwise take for granted or have never articulated themselves. For example:

• How do you know that a number is even?
• How do you know that two fractions are equivalent?

The Tell me about it… prompts encourage creative thinking and brain dump style writing about common math tools or symbols. For example:

• Show me everything you know about…the equal (=) sign
• Show me everything you know about…rulers

Again, the purpose of these prompts is to get kids to think deeply about math ideas, symbols or tools in ways they might not have before or otherwise.

This will help spark meaningful conversations as a class and can help you clear up misconceptions that you might not have seen or heard otherwise.

Ideas for incorporating the prompts:

• Daily warm-up
• During your writing time (combine math & ELA!)
• As an introduction to a new unit
• As a review after a unit
• To discuss, introduce or review key math vocabulary
• As a substitute activity (that you can then discuss when you return!)
